The Flatiron Tree

Trail Thoughts and Musings

Two large branches have sent down support on the lower side of this tree to prevent breaking. Trees or branches that lean often grow these "buttress" supports to offset the lean. This kind of growth is called a "flatiron" because a cross-section through the base of the tree or limb looks like an old fashioned flatiron. You must stand close to the tree and look up to fully appreciate its appearance.
