Entrance to the Fallen Monarch

Trail Thoughts and Musings

This giant sequoia toppled centuries ago and now lies as a connection between the loop trail. Photographs taken of the Fallen Monarch in the late 1800s show the log has decayed very little in more than 100 years. The tree was probably hollowed by fire long before it fell and died. The fire entered from the down hill side of the tree. Since most sequoias shatter when they fall, it is probable that it fell into a deep cushion of snow during the winter.
