Old Circle

Trail Thoughts and Musings

Although redwood trees do produce seeds in the form of tiny cone structures, most new growth is from root offshoots. This often produces a circle of redwoods as if planted by some magical elfin forester. What has actually happened is in the past a large redwood has spawned a ring of new growth around it and then has fallen. After many years it completely decomposes, leaving its circle of children to become mature trees.
