Leaving the end of the parking lot, the trail immediately begins with a meander among the giant old growth redwoods for which Big Basin is famous. Although the Sequoia trail to Sempervirens Fall is never far from the road, it is not a distraction since the redwood giants lend a primordial ambiance to the hike. These trees are almost living fossils since redwoods thrived during the age of the dinosaur.
