Don't be surprised to find that humans are not the only companions to be found on this hike. Although not permitted on Mist Trail, the John Muir Trail is open to horses. Here a pack team is heading back to the valley floor. Trail etiquette gives the horses the right of way. Hikers should step to the edge of the trail to allow passage and to make no sudden movements that might startle them.
