Fallen Goliath

Trail Thoughts and Musings

Although redwood trees can live for thousands of years, due to their shallow root system they can be toppled by heavy winds. They become especially vulnerable after heavy rains. Over 120 redwoods fell this year in Big Basin due in large part to El Niņo. Although the fallen tree in this picture has been here a while as the moss growth indicates, it does indicate how much trail maintenance is required.
