Summary of the July 5, 2022 Meeting
A meeting was held on July 5, 2022 and was attended by 7 people. The main question addressed was what would be the future of our organizaion. It was decided to schedule a follow up meeting on October 4, 2022 at which time a proposal from Patrick Maloy will be discused. The proposal is as follows:

MID MON VALLEY SHIPMATES
JULY 5TH MEETING 2022
Perspective and Proposal for the Meeting

Statement by: Patrick J Maloy, Financial Officer – Mid Mon Valley Shipmates

The Mid Mon Valley Shipmates have experienced several issues that have affected the numbers of responding members.
• Death
• Interest
• Age
• Retirement
• Recalled to Active Duty
• Attrition

Meetings have been cut back due to winter and nighttime driving, as well as attendance. There are various other reasons for the decline of Two Bell Services requested, Flag Etiquette Program Performances, Parade Marching, and the other involvements I have failed to mention.

Proposals:
• Adopt the Status of Moth Ball/Dry Dock
• Continue Two Bell Services if requested
• Present the Flag Etiquette Program if there are at least 4 presenters
• Suspend all Contribution Collections until further notice

If the Term “Disband” is adopted any representation at events in uniform cannot be done. The Two Bell Service and the Flag Etiquette Program cannot be performed, especially in Uniform. If we adopt a Moth Ball status we will be able to keep the Navy and the Mid Mon Valley Shipmates active and in the community to a degree that we are available.

My intent in proposing these steps and nomenclature for describing our status is to keep alive the memory of the past and current Shipmates, which will allow us to present the Shipmates Uniform. This information should be given to the Press to inform all our past Schools, Adult Groups, Boy Scouts, Funeral Homes, and the other sites where we have been invited of our Status - Moth Ball/Dry Dock!

If this is adopted, I will report all activities as Financial Officer at the October Meeting. A request to Werner Hager should be made for an update on the webpage. The note in the local newspaper and on the webpage will save mailing expenses.

Monthly Meetings can still be held. Place and time to be decided via phone communication to members listed on the Phone Call List. The Two members who call are Patrick J Maloy and Larry Masci. The appropriate Chain of command will announce the decision to meet and the place and time of the meeting. Recommendations may be requested. The final decision will be communicated.

The last Member will hold a Very Private Two Bell Service and Toast all Prior Shipmates!

Thank you for your Service!
Patrick J Maloy
Financial Officer

Summary of the December Meeting and Christmas Party

MID-MON VALLEY SHIPMATES HOLD THEIR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY

Pat Maloy, George Essey and Susan Essey arrived at the Hibachi Restaurant at noon to set up the Vacant Chair and Table and to get things organized for today's meeting/party. Susan checked in the Shipmates and guests, giving a box of candy to all the women, and giving each person a program sheet. Joe Gallo offered the invocation and CO Bill Hess officially welcomed everyone to the 2019 Christmas Party, and then led the group in the Pledge to the Flag. Gallo was called upon to lead us in the singing of "God Bless America". It was a very inspirational group sing as the servers and patrons outside of the room were very appreciative of our singing. Essey then explained the reasoning for this type of party as opposed to the usual catered party, i.e., lack of response from the membership, and the cost of having a caterer, and the funds just wasn't available. It was chow time and everybody went to the different chow tables to load up.

The program got underway again at 2:30, with Essey recognizing Werner Hager for his setting up and maintaining the website, www.cyberhikes.com/shipmates . Werner also mentioned that the site can be found by using Google with a search of "valley shipmates". Essey also cited Randy Silbaugh for his Google/Facebook "Mon Valley Shipmates" and recommending everyone to look them up. It was asked why aren't pictures posted in the newsletters. Essey responded that as they are all posted in the two sites just mentioned.

The officers of the MMVSM were introduced as they are entering the last year of their 2 year terms: CO Bill Hess, XO Darrell Molinari, Yeoman Jim Caldwell, Treasurer Patrick Maloy, Chaplain Mario Muccino. MAA Carl Pro was not present and is home from Mississippi and is going to Dubai. Molinari was recognized as he is recovering from kidney removal and being it was his birthday today, Essey led the group in singing Happy Birthday to him.

The Flag Presentation committee, Essey, Masci, Maloy, Molinari and Muccino were introduced. They presented the program to 16 schools and one Cub Scout Pack, traveled 1400 miles, and had 1195 students and 140 adults in attendance.

The definition of Bells in the Navy was read and the story of the Vacant Chair and Table set-up was presented to the group. The reading of the names of the 5 members who have died during this past years was read as the Shipmates stood at attention and then, grieve rest. Deceased were Louis Casciani, Vernon DeMillion, George Diehl, Wilbur Harris, and Richard Walters. The Two-Bell Service was conducted with Maloy manning the Bell, Muccino as Chaplain, and Essey as the moderator. After the playing of the Navy Hymn, the annual roll-call of all the deceased members (63) of the Shipmates organization was read by CO Hess and Masci. Shipmates were called to attention, present arms and taps was sounded. The services concluded with the chaplain giving a prayer. Names for ten door prizes were drawn and awarded, and being we had time to spare, Joe and Maryann Gallo conducted 6 games of Reverse Bingo, with the winners receiving scratch off tickets. Assisting Joe and Maryann was Masci.

Gallo offered the benediction, CO Hess thanked everyone for attending and asked them to drive safely on their return trip home. Essey reminded everyone the next meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020. On behalf of the officers of the M-MVSM, sincere wishes was extended to everyone for a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Thanks was extended to the following for attending the party/meeting: Barry Anders, Jim/Debbie Caldwell, Jim Caserta, George/ Susan Essey, Joe/Maryann Gallo, Werner/Dana Hager, Bill/Karen Hess, Nancy Horvath, Pat Maloy, Bob/Beverly Mascetta, Lawrence Masci/Sophia Janol, Darrell/Cathy Molinari, Mario/Norma Muccino, Dale/Lois Myers, John/Mira Persico, Mrs. Toni Roman, Myron/Evelyn Sepitko and Allen Snyder with Fred Fundy & Barry Fretz.

Just sign it. tear off the reply part and mail it out.) Only 13 Shipmates attended and a total of 28 people attended. D&D catering supplied us with 30 dinners, and a lot of food went home with the attendees. As age and medical situations are turning up, Joe stated this was his last picnic as chairman of the picnic committee and thanked everyone who worked with him, and for him, for the past many years. Great job, Joe, and your leadership will definitely be missed.

A discussion was held on the future of the Christmas Party as the last turnout was also small. A suggestion was made that we hold a night out at a district diner on the 1st Tuesday of December, with the members paying for their meal(s). This has to be decided on very quickly and will be acted upon at the September meeting. Prior to this meeting, you are being asked to think up of places to go to, and anything that would be off great interest. Things like----hours of the party: places to hold the party, etc. The Two-Bell service will be conducted at this party.

A report was made on the funeral service held this past month. One for Richard Walters.and the other one for Leo Zuccarini. The Zuccarini family was very appreciative of our Two-Bell Service and made a donation to the Shipmates. George Essey reported that attendance at the funeral service has been very minimal. For the Walters and Zuccarini services, only nine shipmates showed up to pay final respect. Of the nine, six were from Monessen, and if the Monessen crew didn't show up, there would of been 3 members. It was asked if the members wish to continue the funeral service, or should we abandon it? This was thrown out for the membership to seriously consider and will be brought up again at future meetings. Caserta also made the same comment concerning the Wal-Mart collection. Should we continue this event or shall that be shut down? Think about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
