Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates Annual Christmas Party

The day started out with the committee setting up and decorating the Legion Home at 10 AM and returning at 4 PM with the ladies to finish up. The registration table was handled by George Diehl and Dorothy Cowan, with Susan Essey passing out the free drink tickets and the ladies door gifts. Members started to check in at 4:30. Happy hour and socializing was enjoyed by all. CO Bill Hess extended the welcome to the crew and their guests and lead the Pledge to the Flag, and Joe Gallo lead the group in singing "God Bless America." D&D caterers set up up the food line, Rev. Fred Pfeil gave the invocation, and Patrick Maloy played musical selections thru out the evening.

George Essey introduced the MMVSM officers for the past year and for 2018: CO Willam Hess, XO Jim Caserta, Yeoman James Caldwell, Financial Officer Patrick Maloy, Chaplain George Diehl and MAA Carl Pro. In between the different parts of the program, drawings were held for door prizes. Essey introduced the party committee: Chairperson Patrick Maloy, Joe and Maryann Gallo, Lawrence Masci and Sophia, Robert and Beverly Mascetta, George Diehl and Dorothy, Mario Muccino, Fred Owens, George Essey and Susan. Jim Caldwell present a Bio on our one new member during the 2017 year, Darrell Molinari. Darrell was on a business detail in Baltimore MD and was unable to attend the party.

Essey gave a detailed report for the Flag Presentation committee and their results of the current school year. Over 1200 students have attended out program, along with 80 adults. Accumulative mileage traveled so far is over 1100 miles, at no reimbursement from any source. Introduced were the Flag Committee members: Diehl, Essey, Maloy, Masci, Muccino and Owens. Joe Gallo lead group in the singing of Christmas Carols. Essey read a poem sent in by Shipmate Harry in Florida, entitled, "A Sailor's Grave." Gallo also extended THANKS to Shipmate Harry for his donation of $50 to the organization, being he is unable to attend. A story and a poem given by Master Sgt Roy P. Benevidez, a Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, Vietnam was read by Essey. The entire article is for your pleasure to view and listen to is at the end of this party recap. Jim Caldwell gave his Coast Guard reading The Two-Bell Ceremony was held for George Hutchko and Michael Matush, our two members that answered the call to the Supreme Commander this year. This was followed by Joe Gallo reading of the names of all the deceased members from the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmate Organization.

The rest of the evening was enjoyed listening to MikeDee on the accordion, and his selections of music and jokes kept the people laughing, dancing and singing. Thank you, Mike Kemple, for lining up Mike for the entertainment . The benediction was offered by Rev Fred Pfeil, and a great time was had by all.

Summary of the November Meeting

The November meeting was called to order by Commanding Officer Bill Hess. After the playing of the Navy Hymn, Chaplain George Diehl offered the opening prayer, followed by the flag salute. A moment of silence was rendered in honor of Shipmate Michael Matush. Roll call was taken and absent was Exec Officer Jim Caserta. The October meeting minutes and the financial report were read and approved.

Committee reports: Washington County Veteran committee report by Fred Owens. Although there was no action from this committee this past month, Fred has opted to resign from the committee, and Darrell Molinaro stepped up to take his place. Funeral committee report by George Essey. The proper command when coming to rest at a funeral during the playing of the Navy Hymn, prayer readings and Two Bell, is MOURNING REST. Hands are cupped over each other, resting over the belt buckle instead of the command we were using of HANDS FRONT.

Hess reported on the plans for the Veterans Day parade on November 11. Memorial services will be held at Chess Park in the morning and the Shipmates will do the Two-Bell services. Shipmates are requested to be at the park by 8:45 AM, in the winter uniform. After the memorial services, the parade units will line up at 7th Street at 11 AM and the parade will start at noon and proceed to 1st Street. After the parade, unit members will proceed to the VFW for luncheon. The Shipmates are in the 23rd spot of the parade. Jim Caldwell will not be in town and the truck is not available.

Christmas Party-----To be held on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The committee and all those who would be kind enough to help, should be at the Legion Post at 10:00 AM, Dec. 5, to decorate and set up. The more help we have, the faster we can wrap everything up. The committee will return at 4:00 PM to finish up with the final details. The doors will open at 5:00 PM, with George Diehl and Dorothy Cowan checking in the arrivals and giving out door prize tickets. Again, only one ticket per couple. Susan Essey will also be at the door to pass out the ladies gift and drink tickets. There will be NO share the wealth tickets this year. D&D is the caterer again this year and food will be served at 6:00 PM. Patrick Maloy will be playing music throughout the evening. A Two Bell ceremony will be held, honoring our deceased shipmates of the past year. Door prize drawings will be held all through the evening. Mike Kemple is procuring a band to play. If anyone would like to present anything, i.e. a reading or Navy service story or whatever, during the evening, please contact George Essey at 724-684-9239. Joe Gallo will lead the group in singing Christmas Carols.

The School Flag Presentation committee reported the program was presented at Ringgold North with 137 students and 6 adults: Ringgold South with 150 students and 6 adults: Jefferson Elem in Jefferson Hills PA with 96 students and 8 adults: Fort Cherry Elem with 105 students and 8 adults: Marion Elem in Belle Vernon with 105 students and 6 adults: Amos Hutchinson in Greensburg with 125 students and 6 adults: Ramsay Elem in Mt Pleasant with 126 students and 4 adults: Central Christian Academy in Houston PA with 44 students and 3 adults: Trinity North with 69 Students and 5 adults: Trinity West with 60 students and 5 adults: Trinity East with 69 students and 6 adults: and Trinity South with 60 students and 6 adults. The Trinity schools are all in Washington PA. Totals so far for this school year is 1252 students and 79 adults and 1090 miles traveled. Monessen Elem, Rostraver Elem and McClelland Elem are on the schedule for the rest of 2017, and the HELP SIGN is once again out.

Charleroi Area school is hosting a Veteran appreciation day on Wednesday, November 8, starting with breakfast at 8:30 AM, and followed by the program at the Gym at 9:30 AM. Shipmates are invited to participate, but you must call in your reservation by calling 724-483-3509, EXT 1213. Please wear your winter uniform if you plan to attend MINUS your Dixie Cup hat.

Special treat was available this evening with cookies made by Nancy Tencer for all to enjoy.

Two-Bell services was held Friday afternoon, 3:00 PM, October 6, 2017, in the Robert A. Billick Funeral Home Inc., Grand Blvd and Marion Ave, Monessen, for our Shipmate, Michael Matush. Please make plans to attend to honor our Brother Shipmate. Dress code -- Winter uniforms. Shipmates are requested to be at the funeral home no later than 2:45 PM.

Two-Bell Services was conducted at 2:45 PM, Monday, October 2, in the Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home, 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. Shipmates are requested to be at the funeral home no later than 2:30 PM. Please note that the WINTER uniform is in effect as of October 1st.

Summary of the October Meeting

The October meeting was called to order by Commanding Officer Bill Hess, opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl, and the flag salute. Roll call was taken and absent were Yeoman Jim Caldwell, Financial Officer Patrick Maloy and MAA Carl Pro. Hess read the Sept. meeting minutes, and the financial report was not given. A thank you letter and donation was received and read from Mr & Mrs Daniel Bergstedt for our rendition of the Two-Bell Service held in memory of William Harper.

Committee reports: Hess reported on the tentative plans for the Veterans Day parade in November. Memorial services will be held at Chess Park in the morning and the Shipmates will do the Two-Bell services. After the memorial services, the parade units will line up at 7th Street at 11 AM and the parade will start at noon and proceed to 1st Street. After the parade, unit members will proceed to the VFW for luncheon. Oral invitation has been received to the Veteran Appreciation Breakfast and program at the Ringgold Middle School on Nov.9 at 8 AM. This will be followed by a Veterans Day program at the Gastonville (Ringgold North School) at 1 PM. Additional information will be sent out as I do believe these two school would like for those attending to pre-register.

George Essey reported 7 Shipmates attended the Two-Bell Services for Steve Durko on Monday. Those attending were Jim Caldwell,George Diehl, Essey, Nancy Horvath, Darrell Molinari, Mario Muccino and Lynn Wilson.

The School Flag Presentation committee reported the program was presented to theYough Elem School with 5 members on hand; at St. Sebastian Elem School with 4 members on hand; the Jefferson Hills Elem School schedule was cancelled due to shortage of members and was rescheduled for October 13. Eight schools are scheduled for the month of October and the HELP SIGN is once again out.

The tag day and informational booth at the Fall Mon City Fleatique on October 7th, has been canceled. It will be rescheduled next June as the committee has secured a house front to set up our table and chairs.

A e-mail note was read from Lawrence Masci, who is attending his ships (USS JC Owens, DD-776) reunion. Dale Myers won the attendance award and donated it back to the Shipmates. A Two Bell services will be conducted for George Klochak at the Anthony L. Massafra Funeral Home, 40 Second Street Extension, Donora, PA, on Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 PM. Viewing is from 5 pm to 8 pm, so we will do the services at 5:30 PM. Shipmates are requested to be at the funeral home no later than 5:10 PM.

Summary of the September Meeting

The September meeting was called to order by Commanding Officer Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl, and the flag salute. Roll call was taken, Yeoman Jim Caldwell read the August meeting minutes, and the financial report was given by Treasurer Patrick Maloy.

A thank you card was received and read from the Robert Turnbull Family for our rendition of the Two-Bell Service held in his memory. The reason for our non-participation in the Monessen Fireman parade was explained as we were only given a 2 days' notice to take part in. Hess welcomed back Richard Walters after a long absence due to illness.

Committee reports: Hess reported plans are progressing on the November parade. The position is opened to anyone who would like to be the chairperson for the parade committee, but being no one wanted to step-up and accept the position, Hess appointed himself, if nobody objected. George Essey reported that following a recent 3:30 PM Two-Bell Ceremony, with a turn-out of 18 members, he recommended to continue having the services to be held in the afternoon as opposed to the evening venue. This was later brought up under new business, and with a motion and second, the services will be conducted in the afternoon, pending approval of the funeral directors and families. Maloy reported a meeting for the Christmas Party committee is being planned for late October.

Jim Caserta reported that the 2018 Wal-Mart collection date is set for Saturday, June 9. Hess reported permission was granted to the Shipmates to set up a informational booth at the Fall Mon City Flea Tek on October 7th, from 8 AM to 3 PM, at the corner entrance to Chess Park. More information to be given out at the October meeting.

The position is opened to anyone who would like to be the chair-person for the Uniform committee. Nancy Horvath donated a rack to store the uniform items on, instead of just throwing them in a pile. Thanks extended to Nancy. Maloy reported E-mails were sent out to the schools that received our flag presentation this past season, and requested their application for the 2017-18 season. So far, 12 schools have responded, with the first presentation to be held on Sept. 26. Under new business, a motion was made, seconded and passed to donate $100.00 to the Veterans parade committee in Mon City.

Summary of the August Meeting

The August meeting was called to order by Commanding Officer Bill Hess, followed by a moment of silence in memory of Shipmate George Hutchko, who died earlier this week. Roll call was taken, Yeoman Jim Caldwell read the July minutes, and the financial report was given by Treasurer Patrick Maloy.

A thank you card and a monetary donation was received and read from the William Harper Family for our rendition of the Two-Bell Service held in his memory. Mike Hepple brought in literature from the VA for distribution to the membership concerning the "Veterans Breakfast Club", the free bus trip to WDC on Oct. 26, and an application for Third Party IP Cap Tel Service.

Committee reports: Maloy reported that Werner Hager and Darrell Molinari have agreed to fill-in the vacancy created by the death of George Hutchko on the phone relay system. Fred Owens gave an update on the Washington County Veterans information, specifically, on veteran families in need of assistance. Hess reported on the Mon Valley Veterans meeting, and plans are progressing on the November parade.

The position is opened to anyone who would like to be the chairperson for the parade committee. George Essey reported that only 9 shipmates showed up for the Finleyville parade and only 9 shipmates showed up for the past two funeral services. If the participation keeps dwindling, we may have to curtail these parades and services. Discussion was held on the Two-Bell Service for George Hutchko , and all agreed on the 3:30 PM time, due to the large number of different organization that will be rendering their services in the evening.

Joe Gallo gave a detailed report on the indoor picnic held on July 22 There were 49 attendees and all went well for the day. The Joziwak Hall has been reserved for the 2018 picnic. Gallo thanked the committee people who helped out to make this day a success. The position is opened to anyone who would like to be the chairperson for the Uniform committee. Maloy reported thank you letters and/or E-mails were sent out this week to the schools that received our flag committee this past season, and requested their application for the 2017-18 season.

Summary of the July Meeting

The July meeting was called to order by Commanding Officer Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl, and the flag salute. Roll call was taken and all officers were present except Master-at Arms. In lieu of the June minutes, Yeoman Jim Caldwell read the email recap sent to the membership. The Flag Committee recap was omitted since it was placed in the email as info to the crew. The financial report was given by Patrick Maloy, and both reports were approved.

Correspondence was read from Shipmate Joe Strelecki, stating that he has to resign from the organization due to the fact that he has moved to the state of Oregon, and traveling to the meeting and events could pose a problem for him. The crew extended their best wishes to Joe and his family.

Committee reports: Maloy gave a phone committee report. A new listing was distributed and some minor corrections were made. Uniform supplies are abundant and if you need anything, please see George Hutchko.

The Mon-Valley Vets Council met this past week and plans are in the making for the annual Nov. 11 veterans day parade. The annual Finleyville parade is scheduled for July 26, 2017, at 7:00 PM. Shipmates are to assemble at the CC Dance Studio parking lot by 6:45 PM.

Picnic committee was reported by Joe Gallo. The invites have been sent out and so far 21 response received back. The picnic will be held on Saturday, July 22, in Joziwak Hall, Monessen (Old Park Casino). PLEASE tear off the reply card and return ASAP. If you say that you are attending, PLEASE keep your word and come to the party. We order meals according to the responses, and have to pay for your meal, whether you show up or not.

Funeral committee report of one Two-Bell Service held this month. Emails were sent out to the local funeral directors and additional letters were give out to volunteers to hand deliver to funeral directors not in the email directory and to those who didn't acknowledge the original email that were sent out. The new letters requested the funeral directors to call CO Hess or Essey when a family desires our Two-Bell Service.

Chairperson Jim Caserta reported that he is looking into the Monongahela upcoming events to see if we can be included in it. Christmas party request from chairperson Maloy, that help is needed to line-up an entertainment program.

The Flag Etiquette committee made the following presentation since the last meeting: June 12, Monessen Senior Ctr, with 31 adults in attendance. The Flag Committee retired the old American flag and the PA State flag, and raised a new ones, while all the adults watched and held their hands over their hearts for the event: on June 26, BSA Camp Anawana in Prosperity PA, with 53 Cub Scouts and 38 adults in attendance. Final recap for the school year 2016-17 is: 4165 miles traveled: 3000 Students and 790 adults participants: presented to 35 school groups and 13 adult groups.

Werner Hager brought the newly updated business cards and they were passed out after the meeting. Thanks was given to Hager for ordering them.

The Flag Presentation members took part in the Monessen Senior Center Flag Day program on Monday, June 12. Taking part in the program were George Diehl, George Essey, Nancy Horvath, Patrick Maloy, Lawrence Masci, Mario Muccino and Fred Owens. The Shipmates retired the old American Flag and the ragged State Flag, and raised the newer flags, while the Seniors gathered around, placing their right hands over their hearts during the proceedings. The Flag Program was presented to 31 adults and a light lunch was served after the conclusion of the program.

Summary of the June Meeting

The June meeting was called to order by Commanding Officer Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl, and the flag salute. Roll call taken and all officers were present except Executive Office, Yeoman, and Master-at Arms. The minutes of the May meeting was read by the CO Hess as Yeoman Jim Caldwell was out of town: the financial report was given by Patrick Maloy, and both reports were approved.

Correspondence read from the Monongahela BPO Elks Lodge inviting the Shipmate to participate again at their annual Flag Day program at Chess Park in Monongahela on June 14 at 7:00 PM. After the program, the Shipmates are invited to the Elks Lodge for food and refreshments. Shipmates are requested to be at Chess Park no later than 6:45 PM. (Summer uniform) Committee reports: Maloy gave a phone committee report. A new listing has been realigned and will be distributes ASAP.

Uniform supplies are abundant and if you need anything, please see George Hutchko. No reports from the Washington County Vets Council and the Mon-Valley Vets Council. Publicity report by George Essey. No write-up for May was submitted to the Valley Independent due to his activities with the closing of his church. Will resume submitting items this month. (?) The picnic committee met last months and all plans are ready for annual picnic which will be held on Saturday, July 22, in Joziwak Hall, Monessen (Old Park Casino). Double postal cards are ready and will be mailed out near the end of the month. PLEASE tear off the reply card and return to the Joe. If you say that you are attending, PLEASE keep your word and come to the party. We order meals according to the responses, and have to pay for your meal, whether you show up or not.

Chairperson Jim Caserta reported on the Fund raiser at Wal-Mart that was held on June 3. Some signers failed to show up and/or call off and those that did show up, stood longer hour to fill in for them. A lengthy discussion was held concerning a different approach to fund raising, mainly being that a few number of members stand for the collection time, but all members enjoy the benefits.

Christmas party request from chairperson Maloy, that help is needed to line-up an entertainment program.

There are 2 more presentations scheduled for the school year 2016-17: Jun 12, Monessen Senior Center, 11:00 AM: and for June 26 at BSA Camp Anawana in Prosperity PA at 12 noon. Anyone interested in going with us, please call Maloy or Essey or Masci.

Total recap for the school year 2016-17 is: 3915 miles traveled: 2947 Students and 721 adults, for a total of 3668 participants: presented to 34 school groups and 11 adult groups, for a total of 45 groups. These figures were not available at the meeting, but is published here in this email for your information.

Motion made and seconded to accept the resignation of XO Anders and being no nomination was received from the floor, CO Hess appointed Jim Caserta to the position of Executive Officer. Caserta accepted the appointment and received a round of applause from the membership.

A thank you was extended to all those shipmates that attended the Monessen Memorial Services and the parade and memorial Services in Monongahela. Parade to be held in Finleyville in July, however, no info is available.

Werner Hager was given the permission to have new business cards made.

Correspondence read from Nora Villella, extending her best wishes to the shipmates and remitting her dues. A letter was read from XO Anders, tending his resignation from the shipmates. Shipmate Harry Scholer from Florida sent a letter congratulating the Flag Committee for their program and remitted dues for 2 years

Nick Antonelli gave a report on the Washington County Veteran Committee. Scholarships are available to any veteran who has been in the service. A report of the WCVC meeting was given to CO Hess and is available to anyone who wishes to read it.

Picnic committee chairperson Joe Gallo, reported that the picnic committee will meet on Thursday, May 25, 7 PM, at the New Italian Hall on 7th Street, Monessen. The annual picnic will be held on Saturday, July 22, in Joziwak Hall, Monessen.

Fund raiser at Wal-Mart to be held on June 3. The sign up roster has a few opening and we need signers to fill them in. We ask for one hour of your time to stand and collect, as we are only permitted one collection this year.

The Flag Etiquette committee made no presentations since the last meeting, however, May is a full month of presentations.

Old business -- Yeoman Caldwell reported 48 members paid their 2017 dues, and 5 members were still unpaid.

The issue of having other service personnel join in the flag committee was not proposed and the matter was ended with no action on it.

Under new business, the resignation of XO Anders was placed on hold.

Parade to be held in Monongahela on May 29, at 9 AM. Line up is at the PNC Parking lot and the parade will proceed to the red light at the Sheetz gas station. The memorial service will then be held at the cemetery at 9:45, with additional services at different cemeteries and end up with a luncheon at the Legion Home in Dunkirk.

Monessen Memorial services will be held at the War Memorial in City Park at 12 NOON on Sunday, May 28. The shipmates will be doing the Two-Bell services. In case of rain, services will be held at the Chapel on Penna Blvd, Monessen.

Summary of the April Meeting

The April meeting was called to order by CO Bill Hess, followed by the opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl and the flag salute. Roll call was taken and all officers were present except Financial Officer Patrick Maloy and Master-at-Arms Carl Pro. The minutes of the February meeting were read by Yeoman Jim Caldwell and approved. The financial report was given by Exec Officer Barry Anders for Maloy, and approved pending clarification from the FO. Twenty-three members were in attendance. An email was received from MAA Pro, stating that he is unable to attend the meeting as he is on vacation in Fla.

Shipmates Elmer Truskey and Vince Antonelli were welcomed back after a long absence due to illnesses.

Committee reports:
Washington County Veteran Council requested the Shipmates to appoint another member to the council as we should have three members representing us. Dale Myers stepped up and volunteered to join the council.

George Essey gave the Audit Report for CY 2016, and commended Maloy for his work with the finances and books. The letter was signed by Auditor Wayne Vlasic and Essey.

Our annual fund raising has been approved for June and the sign up list was passed around. The Monessen members will be handling the 8 AM till noon slots and we need 4 men per hour from noon till 4 PM. We are only permitted the one collection this year.

Truskey donated 100 pencil with the Navy Logo to the flag committee to pass out with their program.

The Flag program was presented to the students at the JFK Elem School in Washington PA this past week. Two programs were presented: one to the seventeen 6th graders and another program to the twenty-four 5th graders, including two faculty members.

At the May meeting, a proposal (motion) will be made to allow other Armed Forces members to be included on the Flag Presentation Committee. This proposal is made due to the fact that the present committee is dwindling and no one from the Shipmates are stepping up to supplement the ranks. For the shipmates who are interested, we can include you on our notification call list and if you can make the scheduled program, good. Basically time involvement is approximately 2 hours for each school. This will be a very critical item and all hands are requested to attend and support the flag committee, one way or the other.

Yeoman Caldwell reported 42 members paid their 2017 dues, and 11 are still unpaid. Andy Rudy won the attendance award and graciously donated it back to the Shipmates.

Werner Hager reported that the Sea Tales section of our website now includes Tales of Ghost Ships that might be of interest. Once again he requests members to send him emails of their own experiences while in the Navy which will be added to the Sea Tales section.

Summary of the March Meeting

The March meeting was called to order by CO Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl, and the flag salute. Roll call was taken and all officers were present except MAA Carl Pro. The minutes of the February meeting was read by Yeoman Jim Caldwell, and was corrected to read that the Monongahela 250 year celebration will be held in 2019 instead of 2017. The financial report was given by FO Pat Maloy, and both reports were then approved.

Introduced was new member, Darrell Molinari of Charleroi, who served in the Navy from 1969 to 1972, aboard the USS Leary, DD-879. He attained the Rank of E-4. Welcome aboard, Darrell!

Shipmate Mike Matush was welcomed back after a long absence due to illnesses.

The Flag Etiquette committee made 2 presentation this past week. This past Friday, the flag Committee went to North Huntingdon and presented the Flag program to 27 adults at the Redstone Highland Adults facility. This morning, the group traveled to Cecil Intermediate School and presented the program to 210 5th grade students and 11 faculty members.

Fred Owens gave a report of the new co-pays for VA prescription and explained the breakdown and costs, which is to be lowed to the veterans. The VA now has a new pre-eligibility procedure and form to be filed for consideration to be buried in the National Cemetery.

Old business -- Yeoman Caldwell reported 39 members paid their 2017 dues, and 8 complimentary dues were submitted for the flag committee members. Under new business, George Essey gave the audit report for calendar year 2015, and commended FO Maloy for his work with the finances. The audit was conducted by Wayne Vlasic and Essey. The 2016 audit will be completed prior to the April meeting.

A framed decommissioning memento of the submarine, USS SkipJack was on display and Mario Muccino requested to have it to add to his collection of Naval Vessels. Caldwell read an article about veterans being permitted to shop ONLINE, starting in November, at the local PX's.

Joe Tencer won the attendance award and graciously donated it back to the Shipmates. The meeting was adjourned with Chaplain Diehl giving the benediction. Next meeting will be on April 4, 2017

Sympathies are extended to Shipmate Wayne Vlasic and his wife Cathy, on the passing into eternal rest, Cathy's mother, Sandra Smerilli. Viewing was held today, and funeral services will be held tomorrow, Monday, March 6th. May her memory be eternal.

Shipmate Wilbur Harris was discharged from the Care Center, but Friday a week ago, he had a incident and was life-flighted to UPMC. This past Thursday, he was moved to Montifore. Please keep Wil in your prayers.

George Diehl is recuperating at home after a slip and fall incident while on vacation. Get well, George, and hope to see you at the meeting.

Barry Anders, George Essey, Patrick Maloy and Mario Muccino took part in the READING ACROSS AMERICA program this past Thursday at Gastonville Elementary School. Anders and Essey read to the students in First grade, Maloy read to the Second graders and Muccino had the Fifth graders.

Eugene Maisano is back home after an overnight stay at Mon Valley Hospital and is doing as well as expected.

Two Bell Services

This past Friday, we conducted a Two-Bell Service for Joseph Wohar at the Massafra Funeral Home in Donora. Taking part in the services was Michael Wohar, grandson of Mr. Wohar and is enrolled in the NROTC program at college, who did the Two-Bell remembrance and did a wonderful presentation. A very special THANK YOU is extended to the following Shipmates who came and took part in remembering a Shipmate who was called-in by the Supreme commander: Barry Anders, Jim Caldwell, George Diehl, George Essey, Werner Hager, George Hutchko, Sam Levy, Pat Maloy, Robert Mascetta, Lawrence Masci and Mario Muccino. Also in attendance were Mrs. Levy and Mrs. Hager.

Summary of the February Meeting

The February meeting called to order by CO Bill Hess, followed by the playing of the Navy Hymn, opening prayer by Chaplain George Diehl, and the flag salute. A moment of silence was held in memory of our deceased Shipmate, John "Jack" Hoak. Roll call taken and all officers were present. The minutes of the November meeting was read by the Yeoman, Jim Caldwell. The financial report was given by FO Pat Maloy. The new balance was corrected to the figure given by the audit committee, which was approved.

A letter of appreciation and a certificate of appreciation was received and read from Wreaths Across America for our $400 donation.

A letter from the Sons of the American Revolution, George Washington Chapter, was read concerning the wreaths that we sponsored and we were credited with donating with total of 39 wreaths for the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, and for the second year in a row, all graves were covered.

A letter of appreciation was read from the Fisher House for our $400 donation.

A letter of appreciation was read from Western Penna. Wounded Warriors, thanking us for the $400 donation. This organization has been given 2800 acres of land by Consol Energy near Eighty-Four PA for use by the South Western PA Wounded Warrior to use for rehab, etc.

A donation of $100 was received from Mrs. Dorothy Hoak and family, the widow of Shipmate Jack Hoak, for our Two-Bell Services for Jack.

Celebrating 250 years this year, Monongahela city is planning a week long event-filled celebration the week of July 10. Stay tuned for more information.

The status of St. Anthony's hall for our annual picnic is in limbo, so the picnic this year will be held at the Joziwak Hall in Monessen. This is the former Park Casino on Grand Blvd. The date is Saturday, July 22. Again, stay tuned.

The Flag Etiquette committee made 2 presentation in January, the Rotary club in Monongahela with 15 adults in attendance. Then the BSA, GSA, CSA and Brownies at Ringgold South with 42 scouts and 47 adults in attendance. For the school year of 2016-17, the committee has presented the program to 1959 students, and to 489 adults and has traveled over 2463 miles.

Good of the organization: Lawrence Masci, on behalf of his family, extended his sincere thanks to the Shipmates that attended the wake for his sister, Virginia Marcozzi. He then read excerpts from a June 21,1963 Messing and Berthing Newsletter from the U.S.S JC Owens DD-776, which contained an article on our Shipmate Harry Scholer from Florida. Mike Hepple won the Luck of the Draw: George Diehl gave the benediction, and the meeting was adjourned at 7:48 until the next meeting on March 7, 2017. CO Hess requested prayers for his wife who will be undergoing surgery the week.

The Flag committee presented the Flag Etiquette Program Monday night, Jan 30, to the B.S.A., G.S.A. and Cub Scouts and their leaders and parents, at the Ringgold South School at 6:00 PM. In attendance were 42 scouts and 39 adults.

The first meeting of 2017 season for the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the James C. Ford Post 949 American Legion Home in Carroll Township. Dues for 2017 are payable and is set at $20.00. Make checks payable to Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates. The meeting is open to all Naval Personnel, active, retired and honorably discharged.

Shipmate Wilbur Harris is in Shadyside Hospital, and the family has asked for your prayers for his health.

Dues are now due for 2017. You can pay them at the meeting on February 7th, or mail a check to Yeoman Jim Caldwell at 2112 RTE 481, MONONGAHELA PA 15063: make checks payable to Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates and they are $20.00. This way, Jim will have your card ready at the meeting.

The regular monthly meetings will resume on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, 7:00 PM, at the American Legion Home in Dunkirk.

Flag Presentation

The Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates recently presented a flag etiquette program to Carmichaels Women's Civic Club members and guests. Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates who participated were, Barry Anders, George Essey, Mario Muccino, George Diehl, Larry Masci, Patrick Maloy, Fred Owens and Sam Levy. Christmas Party 2016

Early Tuesday morn, the following showed up at the Legion Home to set up tables, decorate and get the essentials set up for the evening: Barry Anders, Jim Caldwell, George Diehl, George Essey, Joe Gallo, Wilbur Harris, George Hutchko, Patrick Maloy, Robert Mascetta, Beverly Mascetta, Lawrence Masci and Mario Muccino. These same people, along with their guests, returned at 4:00 pm, to get the final details ready. The members started to arrive shortly after 4:20 and we were ready to rumble. The Empty Chair was set up to honor our missing Shipmates. Attending were 83 shipmates and their guests, plus the Ringgold Harp Ensemble group

While Santa (Sam Levy) was roaming the floor and passing out gift wrapped candy to the attendees, CO Bill Hess started the evening program by extending the welcome to all members and their guests: Hutchko lead the Pledge to the Flag: Gallo led the singing of "God Bless America: Yeoman Caldwell introduced the 2016 new member, Werner Hager, who served on the Carrier, USS Wasp, and has undertaken the task of being the webmaster for the Shipmates web page at www.cyberhikes.com/shipmates.

Diehl offered the invocation, and Maloy, Chairperson for the Annual Christmas Party, extended his thanks for the work of the committee and to the people for their participation in this event.

At 6:00 PM, Bruno's Catering started serving the food. This year was different as Bruno and his staff did the actual serving as opposed to everyone helping themselves. When everyone completed their turn, seconds were available, and then Bruno's staff made up take home boxes for everyone to take with them. Bruno and his staff were introduced, and everyone applauded them for a job well done. XO Anders introduced the Ringgold School Harp Ensemble, under the direction of Mrs. Sandrock, and they entertained us with musical selections as a group and by different soloists , as Jordan Drischler performed selections on the violin.

The Two-Bell ceremony was conducted, with Phillip Appolonia and John "Jack" Hoak, both WW-II Veterans, departing our shores for the heavenly shores during 2016, and the reading of the names of all deceased members of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates. Conducting the service were Essey, Diehl, Anders and Maloy. The Navy Hymn was offered by Jordan Drischler on the violin.

Gallo lead the group in singing of Christmas Carols, story and joke telling. Door prizes were awarded thru-out the evening. A fruit-basket donated by Anthony Faraci from Monessen Foodland was won by Muccino.

Essey recognized and honored the Flag Etiquette Committee for the work they have done this year to bring honor to our Organization. Members of the committee included

The flag committee has finished the first half of the school year with the following results: Presented the program to 1917 students at 23 different schools: To 427 adults at these 23 schools and 6 adult organizations. Vehicle driven by Anders, Diehl, Essey and Owens, plus everyone for the local schools, for a total of approximately 2,371 miles, without requesting mileage expenses. The committee traveled as far east as Latrobe PA; south to Carmichael PA; west to Houston PA; and north to Pleasant Hills PA. Share the wealth was won by Barry Fritz, Mario Muccino and Fred Fundy, wth Muccino graciously surrendering his winning to the Shipmates.

Thanks was extended to George Hutchko and the American Legion Post for the use of the hall, and to the committee members, Patrick Maloy, Barry and Diane Anders, George Diehl and Dorothy Cowan, Jim and Debbie Caldwell, George and Susan Essey, Joe and Mary Ann Gallo, Sam and Ruth Levy, Lawrence Masci and Sophia Janol, Robert Mascetta, Beverly Mascetta, Mario and Norma Muccino. Benediction was offered by Diehl and the party concluded at 9:15 PM.

Roll call taken and absent were Financial Officer Patrick Maloy, Yeoman Jim Caldwell, MAA Carl Pro. The minutes of the October meeting was not read due to the absence of the Yeoman. The financial report was given by XO Anders, which was approved.
The Phone Committee report was given and is working very good.

Anders gave a recap of the Flag Presentation Committee for the period of October 6 to November 1. They visited eleven schools and one adult group, with 845 students and 41 adults attending. The committee covered 1044 miles for this period. Earlier today, the committee visited Trinity North and Trinity South in Washington PA, and the students at Trinity South sang Happy Birthday to Fred Owens for his 90th birthday. Owens and Jack Hoak are two WW-II vets who make the school trips with the committee. At Trinity North, we were requested to take down the old flag and raise up the new one with the 5th grader watching the procession of paying the proper respect during lowering and the raising of the American Flag

Fred Kernisky won the 50-50 and graciously donated it back to the Shipmates. Thank you Fred!

The two year terms of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates is to be concluded at the end of the year. CO Hess opened the floor for nominations and the following is the results of the nominations which was approved by floor acclamation of the members: Hess as Commanding Office, Anders as Executive Office, Caldwell as Yeoman, Maloy as Financial Secretary, Diehl as Chaplain and Pro as Master-at-Arms. (Our old officers are our new officers)

On the sick list----Michael Matush. We welcomed back to the meeting Mike Kepple, after having a stroke following last month's meeting. Also, welcome back to Michael Muccino.

Werner Hager gave an update on the Shipmates web page. Hager passed out sample of the new business cards, but it was suggested, if possible, to print on the back side of the card, the names of the organizations that we donate our monies to. Hager gave out handouts explaining the web-site and requested that the members submit stories of their Navy life so that they can be recorded in the SEA-TALES section.
Please consider submitting a story. It is very important to capture our Navy experiences before they disappear without a trace!

The minutes of the September meeting was read and approved as was the financial report. Committee reports were given by the following committee: phone relay, publicity, Wash. County Veterans, Mon Valley Veterans, picnic and funeral.

Pat Maloy set Saturday, October 22, 10AM, as the meeting date for the Christmas Party committee and volunteers. Place to be announced later. Jim Caserta gave a report on the recent tag day that was held at Wal-Mart and extended his sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this a successful collection day. A motion was made, seconded and approved to purchase small flags for next years tag days, and Caserta was appointed to purchase same.

Barry Anders gave a report for the Flag committee for September: 4 schools were visited as was 1 adult group: 460 students and 93 adults were in attendance: 449 miles has been traveled: 18 additional schools and 6 more adult groups are on the schedule between today and May 19, 2017.

OCTOBER 1ST IS THE DAY THAT THE UNIFORM OF THE DAY CHANGES FROM SHORT SLEEVES TO LONG SLEEVES.

The Flag Committee has requested to keep wearing short sleeves for their program until such time the weather dictates to convert to long sleeve. The two year terms of the Mid-Mon Valley Shipmates is to be concluded at the end of the year. CO Hess ask for volunteers to conduct a nomination roster for next month and had no takers. A motion was made, seconded and approved to do away with the nominating committee and just take nomination from the floor, as the nominating committee will get no one to agree to run for office. Nominations will be welcomed at the November meeting for 2 year terms for Commanding Office, Executive Office, Yeoman, Financial Secretary, Chaplain and Master-at-Arms.

A discussion was held on the Dept of Navy doing away with the rating emblem on your stripes. BOO to the officials that decided this stupid decision. John Benyak won the share the wealth, but donated it back to the Shipmates. Chaplain Diehl offered the benediction and meeting was adjourned until November 1, 2016.
